Signature Tour Day 1

Glenelg to Victor Harbour

113km and 1,179m elevation

Well today definitely goes down as one of the toughest ever on the bike.  We had huge winds, driving rain that stung, and it was damn cold too!  Do I care? No.  Any day doing this in such trying conditions (with the most inspiring set of people that you can ever imagine) still beats having cancer, and that is what it’s all about.  We are riding to cure cancer.

The route is normally a very scenic one (which I managed to appreciate two years ago when we took the same route when I was in a support role).  We follow some spectacular coast line and Victor Harbour is a lovely seaside town.  We also climbed up the famed Willunga Hill, which was good as I really needed to warm up at that stage!  No school presentations today as SA are still on holidays.  Boy did I enjoy my shower today!!

Last night at the first community dinner in Glenelg I was awarded the Green jersey for Awareness.

This is of particular significance to me as it was created in honour of Conor McAullife who lost his battle with cancer aged 3.  I know his parents and grandparents very well, and I still see the raw pain 9 years on from this.  It’s the main reason I continue to come back, put in many hours of training, and then having to raise in excess of around $20,000 per annum.  I don’t want any 3 year old’s dying from cancer.  That sucks and it’s just not fair.

I want to thank each and every one of my supporters, donators, cycling buddies who helped to get me fit, and especially everyone who attended Cory and my trivia night last weekend which got both of us over our fundraising targets.  I am now sitting on $15,337.  I will still keep pushing for more though, because the funds are needed for all these vital cancer breakthroughs that TdC are funding.  Check out their website under where the money goes.

For my cycling buddies who follow the pro cyclists, Jens Voigt is turning out to be an absolute gem.  He is a real talker, very funny, of course an awesome rider, very giving of his time, and he is a father of 6 (kudos!!).

Jens Voigt!!

Catch you all on day 2.  The weather is going to be brutal again apparently, but day 3 it is supposed to improve.  Cross your fingers for me!!
