Signature Tour Day 2

Victor Harbour to Meningie

146km, 871m elevation, 5 hrs 33 min ride time

Well today was a mixed bag in terms of difficulty on the bike.  The first 50km was pretty cruisy, but we had alot of mechanicals which meant a slower pace and ended up lots of stopping and waiting.  Once we got a roll on, we had sunshine, but still a pretty stiff wind, mostly hitting our tails.  Much improved on yesterday.  After morning tea we did a few ‘staged’ rides for inclusion in the Sunrise special that airs on channel 7.  Hope it makes it because I was up the front for some of it!!  For our next 50km I spent the whole time up in what we term the engine room.  These people drag the whole peloton along.  Another lady was up there with me (Karen), plus Jens Voigt.

It was a very enjoyable 50km, with a bit of a cross wind coming across my right shoulder.  After lunch in Wellington we crossed on the vehicular ferry and hit some very nasty winds.  The next 40km or so had brutal headwinds and cross winds.  Our engine room deserve a medal for getting us in safely in this last section.  There were many weary bodies after this part.

Regardless of the fact that for the past 2 days Mother Nature has been a bitch, there is not one negative person I have come across.  We all know why we are there, and it is so much more than a tough day on the bike!

The small town of Meningie put on yet another amazing community dinner for us.  The food was very yummy, and we had a few locals doing an auction that raised over $3,000 for TdC.  It is such a small town that the team is spread far and wide in order to sleep, including local family billets.  Very cool!

Tomorrow is a big day of 188km, and its getting late, so I am off to have some well earned sleep.
