21 Days to Melbourne Ironman

One very happy team after a 260 km 11 hour day.

One very happy team after a 260 km 11 hour day.

So why swim 3.8km’s, bike 180 and run 42.2 – I guess it’s been an event I have always watched with admiration and in completing my last half Ironman wondered – could I complete such an event?

The opportunity opened this year, in committing to again ride with TDC on their Signature Tour I figured I would have the bike legs so just need to add some serious run and swim fitness. The final enabler was Geoff at TDC who landed a TDC sponsorship that facilitated event entry to this sold out event for 20 or so of us who are committing to fundraise to a $2,000 level and compete under the TDC banner – an opportunity I figured I didn’t want to miss.

So what does it take to do an Ironman? I wasn’t quite sure and figured that balancing family, job and travel means I need to approach this goal with some professional help. So that’s where coach Brad Pamp fits in, a 20 year plus sports and fitness trainer who has completed more than a few Ironman’s. Our goals were aligned – lets set a goal of training efficiently with the goal of finishing in good physical health vs collapsing over the line.

So what does a heavy training week look like – let me share that with you in a future post but today’s Sat program was a 100 km ride, caught up with the regular TDC team on route but had to stay alone as Triathlons are non drafting and tri bikes with their forward leaning bars are not safe in a regular peloton so I joined the team for a water refill and bid them safe riding. It was was a dark start and sometimes wet ride, still it was fast and the 11 km run straight after the bike felt great so feeling good with 21 days to go.
