Day 2: Bundadoon to Canberra
Before we get into the meat of todays report I want to introduce you to a very busy character on tour this year…Willie Maykit. Each day he will provide some broader insight and commentary to the days adventures. He’d like to say a few words about the past couple of days…
“Hello everyone, my name is Willie Maykit and I’ve joined the 2014 Tour de Cure Signature Tour from Sydney to Hobart as a roving reporter. Over the 10 days that the Tour covers the amazing 1,600+ kms to Hobart, I will be spending days riding with the Tour, working within the support team and keeping you posted on our progress.
The TdC tour is an amazing experience, raising critical funds for cancer research, support and prevention projects helping men, women and children. It’s an honour to join such a great group of people genuinely striving to make a difference in the battle against this insidious disease. Many of you are receiving this update because you have so generously donated to a rider or support crew member and for this many thank you’s!
At the dinners each night we present our coloured jerseys. These are treasured by the recipients and really stand out in the pelotons. For amazing performance leading into tour, the initial jerseys were present to:
- Pink (inspiration) Lisa Healey
- Yellow (attitude) Jodi Harris
- Blue (guts) Renae McGarvie
- White (focus) Andrew Woodward
- Green (awareness) Sue Bishop
- Orange (doer) Ann Smith
Last night, after a shower and cleaning of my bike, I headed for the team community dinner. The hall in Bundanoon was full to the brim and buzzing. Jules and Phil were our hosts and created a great atmosphere. We presented our cheque to Petria King and her Quest of Life foundation and she was inspirational in her acceptance.
We also presented our jerseys for the very tough day 1:
- Guts – Daren Armstrong
- Attitude – Callum Eade
- Inspiration – Karen Hadjinicola
- Focus – Phil Gallant
- Doer – birthday boy Paul Baretta
- Awareness – Cora Zillich
We headed out to a morning that was slightly overcast, but thankfully not raining. The weather got better as the morning went on and our moods followed. One of the support team commented that whilst yesterday the pelotons were silent with heads down, today you could hear the chatter from 100’s of meters away. Love the sun!
Morning tea was beside the road and the team were pushing on hard. Our speed was up and we were eating the kilometres.
Saturday does not usually include a school visit, however that was not the case today. The kids of Tarago Primary School all came in to school today to be with us -Sensational! Why, because they were genuinely interested and gave us their undivided attention as we delivered our message of Be Fit, Be Healthy, Be Happy.
What great kids and what a great school visit. They even gave us a beautiful donation, which they had all contributed to.
We also managed to get a full tour photo and it was impressive to see everyone all together.
Tomorrow, we hit the high country……bring it on!
Willie.”
Finally, a couple of points before I sign off.
