Here I go again…

In ten days time I will be rolling out of Sydney with 60 other riders as I participate in my second Tour de Cure signature tour. Although one would think that last year’s experience holds me in good stead, there is still a degree of trepidation as the start date nears. Although I think I am physically ready, the challenge associated with riding 1,600 kilometres in ten days cannot be underestimated.

I completed my last big training ride on the 9th March, an incredibly scenic 150 kilometre loop that took in Marysville, Lake Mountain, Warburton and Donna Buang. Thank you to David Novak, a friend from work, who not only organised the ride but was incredibly gracious on the day and held back for me on those long climbs – he is in another league. He also managed to take a great picture of me while we were climbing Lake Mountain (below). I can assure you that beneath that smile there is a world of pain.

There is a lot I’m looking forward to about this year’s tour. I am looking forward to reuniting with some of the amazing people I met on last year’s tour, to the physical and mental challenges associated with riding Tour de Cure (as crazy as that may sound), to once again riding alongside Nathan Jones, a stage four melanoma survivor who is in many ways lucky to be with us let alone be riding 250 kilometres over two days, and to seeing Trish Shaw, a teacher who I met during a school visit in Wangaratta last year whose husband was subsequently diagnosed with cancer, further evidence that this disease does not discriminate. Most of all however, I am looking forward, along with all my supporters, to making a contribution to this very worthy cause. Roll on the 28th March!
