Day Seven: Eildon to Melbourne

A special day for me at Tour de Cure today. We conducted a visit to a school in the Melbourne suburb of Surrey Hills attended by Peter Braine’s children, one of the Tour de Cure riders. Peter and I led the peloton into the school and in addition to being greeted by the children attending the school, I was also greeted by my wife and youngest daughter Charlotte. It was great to not only see them, but to have them watch as we presented our “Be Fit, Be Healthy, Be Happy” cancer prevention message to the school children, which is such a big part of being on tour.

Besides that, there was some riding done today. We covered 150 kilometres that included 1,500 metres of climbing. A big part of the climbing was done on the Black Spur, arguably the most famous and well known tourist road in Victoria. It is a spectacular road to drive, and to ride along it with a group of other cyclists is an absolute privilege. Shortly after leaving the Black Spur, we stopped at Healesville for two school visits and some lunch. We then meandered our way through the Yarra Valley, a famous wine making region in Victoria. All that was left after that was to negotiate the traffic and tram tracks as we rode into Melbourne, with the final climb of the day being the ramp that took us onto the Spirit of Tasmania.

Day 8 tomorrow sees the Tour de Cure hit Tasmania for the very first time. I am beginning to look forward to traversing the Tasman Bridge that will take us into Hobart.
