DAY 3- Meningie – Boardertown 181km

Today was the second of our guest rider days……..

The Meningie locals sent us off with a breackfast at the 9th hole hut in the local golf coarse. There was a hole in one competition where MANY alleged golfers failed miserably at.

The ride started in the rain for the first 30km. What would have been a magic ride along SA famous Coorong was just WET!!!

The weather dried out after morning tea but my shoes were soaked by then.

Today I spent the entire 181km in the “engine room” pulling the pelaton. We had a couple of guest riders who were struggling (understandably) with the long distance.

One such rider is Renee. She is the wife of Jamie, who is a full tour rider whom I have had the pleasure to ride with last year.

Renee had been through thyroid cancer last year. She started riding 10 months ago with the goal of achieving completing 2 days of the tour.

Today we all worked so well together to get her to the end and realise her goal! Us full tour riders worked well as a team to get her to the end and achieve a great personal goal.

I, being in the engine room had Dave Curran and Tim Brown behind me, sledging ANYONE in front of them from the peanut gallery. I re-named them “Statler and Waldorf” from the muppets.

We had a pretty good afternoon alI working together. One highlight was watching the Swiss backpacker overtaking us, not just on the other side of the road but on the gravel shoulder on the opposite side, nearly rolling the van and taking us all out of the action.

The best part of this was seeing the police car that was escorting us take off after him and pull him over. Classic moment!!!!

God bless SA police!!

Dinner tonight was at the Boardertown Football club where Ken, the local identity entertained us with his lengthy monologue about various random things that did not make sense.

A nice guy, but should NEVER be given a microphone. His Philippino wife had had way too many sherbets prior to our function and spoke loudly through all the speeches. I had strange flashbacks to v arious scenes from “Pricilla, Queen of the Desert”. I was sure we were going to be hit by ping pong balls at any moment…………..

I am pretty tired now and MUST go to sleep. We have about 150 odd km to ride….

My butt hurts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
