Feb assessment ride done and dusted

The February training guide required an assessment to be completed consisting of a minimum 180km ride distance and 2000m climbing.  Beginning at 4:30am I rolled out of our driveway and headed to the city where I was to meetup with the rest of the QLD TdC contingents participating in the training ride for today.  From there we headed out along Samford Rd, to Settlement Rd on our journey to cover Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious to gain the vertical ascent required.

Climbing at our own paces I achieved a PR on my Mt Nebo effort which I was happy the training is on track and sustained power is available.  We re-gathered at the Cafe and made way up Glorious before descending the mega-fun descent to Samford.  Quick drink stop in at home supplied by my ever supporting wife and quick hello to the kids whom had just gotten out of bed, and back out we headed towards Dayboro.

By now it was getting hot and the sun beating down.  Extra sunscreen applied and continued to Petrie and to Kallangur we had our last refuel on bakery goods and icy cold Coke for sugar and caffeine 🙂  By now it was a good 35degs, but we had 70 odd kms still to go, and continued to Redcliffe then south over the Ted Smouth bridge.  Finally a tail wind which was nice, but the reflected heat from the concrete was almost too much to bear.  The rest of the crew and I parted ways at Virginia as I knew I still had 30kms to get home whilst the rest were heading to Bulimba for their finish.

The cycle paths were strangely quiet on such a hot day and again the concrete made it hotter than ambient, but with some lovely supportive texts from my wife for the last 15kms got me home…..190kms and 2800m climbing, I was done and really looking forward to a drink

Happy with where my training is at, given the conditions and having a 27kmh average should indicate things are on track in the cycling dept
