Training Program Steps up a Gear

My training regime has increased over the last couple of weeks with the starting line in Adelaide only two months away.

February in Melbourne has been one of the hottest in recent memory with 15 days topping the 30 degree mark – so early morning rides have been a necessity!

A recent training ride from Highett to Mt Eliza, then up to Port Melbourne and back home was just on 110km with an average speed of more than 30 km/h, not including the hill climbs.

The aim from now until the Tour event starts is to get out on the bike at least four times per week, covering a total of 400km.

The Garmin GPS watch is a great little gadget which is used to keep track of distance, average speed, heart rate and elevation amongst other things.

I have included some of the data images below, including a map of the recent 110km ride.

With the longest stage on the Canberra to Adelaide journey coming in at 228km, a few more of these longer sessions will be required to ensure my readiness for the Tour!

Other longer stages include:

  • Day 3     Meningie, SA to Bordertown, SA – 180km 6.50 approx hours
  • Day 6     Bendigo, VIC to Benalla, VIC – 171km 6.25 approx hours
  • Day 10   Jindabyne, NSW to Canberra, ACT – 185km 7.50 approx hours

Regards,

Martin

The Garmin watch provides a range of useful data, including my heart rate average (141 bpm) and max (172 bpm) from a recent training ride.
