Training is on Track

With the upcoming Signature Tour set to snake its way through the Snowy Mountains it is important that we get plenty of hill training in our legs.

In preparation for this, I joined three other Tour de Cure riders recently and we headed for the beautiful Dandenong Ranges on a cool and dark March morning.

We set off at about 5.45am and pedalled the 50kms out to Ferntree Gully, to be greeted by a picturesque sunrise with dark clouds and a storm threatening in the distance.

We spent our morning climbing mountains, up one side followed by a very cold decent down the other side, only to turn around and climb back up!

The climbs were long and tough but with a leg of the Tour set to reach about 2500 metres above sea level, it was definitely good training.

As we finished the last climb at the SkyHigh Mount Dandenong lookout, overlooking Melbourne, the rain started to fall and it was time to head back to bayside Melbourne.

With the wind in our favour and the rain easing, we made good time.

It was back out on the bike the next morning for a steady 110km beach road ride followed by a 10km run. A lot flatter terrain this time round!

I have more mid week rides and group rides scheduled over the coming weeks, as well as some longer distances incorporating hill climbing scheduled for the weekends.
