The way it should be …

I went to a funeral last week.

headstones

This lovely lady nearly made it to 90. Every time we spoke, she was always grateful.   Grateful for a life well lived … 2 loving daughters, 5 adoring grandchildren & 2 great-grandchildren.    Lots of happy memories of times growing up when things were tough … raising a family with her wonderful husband  … being involved in many different community activities. … the trips away … the cups of tea with anyone who’d make the time to sit & chat.

Before she passed, she told me … “this is the way it should be” … children are meant to bury their parents after a full life.

Unfortunately, too many parents bury their children or children bury their parents before their time … for many different reasons, often cancer.

In the Sydney Morning Herald today … “Cancer takes over from heart disease as our biggest killer.“

Quoting from the article … “The co-author of the WHO World Cancer Report, Bernard Stewart, said the main message from the report was that cancer was a ‘largely preventable disease’ … the increasing burden of cancer with 14.1 million cases in 2012 meant something must be done to stop cancers before they occurred … we now know for certain that the vast majority of cancers are attributable to what have been called lifestyle choices … both cancers & cardiovascular diseases have common risk factors including smoking, poor nutrition, overweight/obesity and physical inactivity”

The “ Be Fit – Be Healthy – Be Happy “ message Tour de Cure shares with primary school children is part of the education to help them make healthy lifestyle choices, and hopefully avoid becoming part of these statistics.   Your support funds cancer prevention projects addressing education & awareness within communities as well as projects focused on cancer research & support … THANKS AGAIN.

There is still much work to done to ensure that funerals are for those who lived a full life     … “ the way it should be “

… ‘til next time … take care

Cheers … Owen
