2018 Tour de Cure – Day 0

Today is the day that the excitement starts to build. The day before Tour really starts. No riding today but we need to get to the start point this year which is sort of off the beaten track. The day started early enough getting to the airport for an 8.40 flight to Mackay which is around a 1hour 40-minute flight from Brisbane. Because of the volume of bikes that had to be transferred from the other flights (There is no direct flight from Sydney or Melbourne) we were held up for about 20 minutes on the tarmac while they played a game of stack the bikes in the hold below.

The flight was pretty standard but we could tell that Mackay was looking forward to us coming because they had laid out the yellow arch at the airport and turned the fountain Yellow for us !!

Its always great fun on the day before Tour connecting with old Tour friends and meeting new people. This year there seems to be a lot of people that are new to Tour so the excitement level is going through the roof.

As soon as we got there and we settled into our accommodation we went and collected our kit for the day. We have some blue kit and some pink kit.

Once we were all organised it was off to dinner. As I have said Mackay was very excited the whole Tour de Cure and we had 360 people in the room for speeches. Jens Voigt who should have joined us by now (There was a visa issue !!) Joined us via Skype and imparted some wisdom going into the ride.

The best part of the night is when we donate funds to a local charity. Tonights $10,000 was given to the Leukaemia Foundation who supports patients to travel from Mackay to Townsville for treatment.

It’s off to bed for me now. Time to get a bit of shut-eye before a big day tomorrow.
