All the training and fundraising is done – Tour is here

We call this Day 0. Its the day before Tour actually starts and its a hive of activity. My day started around 6am with a bit of a rush to get to our plane to fly out to Sydney for Tour. The stupid guy weighing the bags thought that I had too much luggage so that was not a good start but the plane ride went quickly via an interesting …Read more

How do you raise $12,000 year on year.

Getting ready for a Signature Tour is hard. The hours of on the bike, the sore butt, the tired muscles ………… and that’s just the training to get ready. The harder part of getting ready for Tour is fundraising the $12,000 each year to participate. Easy the first year, you are all excited. Your friends haven’t heard the story before, they are thinking ………… shit how can he ride that …Read more

Thongday Thursday – You need a bit of fun when training

Today my mate Dave turned up and he had forgotten to bring his shoes. Seems you can ride without your bike shoes πŸ™‚ Not good training but he got through the ride. Perhaps this is a new TDC trend that we can start.

Sometimes you need to think about why you’re doing this.

After 10 years of riding and raising money for Tour de Cure and Cancer research sometimes, you just have one of the days where you think. WTF am I doing here. You know those days when work is a headache, life is hectic with training, and fundraising, trying to keep the home front happy and you are burning the candle at both ends. Today was a day when I needed …Read more

Hills are my friend ……. that’s what I keep telling myself anyway !!

This Tour has heaps of hills. Over the 9 days, we will be climbing over 14,000 meters so I have been trying to get as much hill work as I can tolerate. This morning Brett, Daren and I went to Mt Coot-tha which is a local Brisbane hill with awesome views of the City. Sitting here at work writing this I can tell my legs have done a bit of …Read more

Fundraising – it takes creativity

Working out how to raise $12,000 year on year for 10 years requires a bit of creativity. Finding like minded people certainly helps. This morning I went to talk to the local Rotary club who donated to my fundraising. I have to stop myself from being blasΓ© when I talk about the Tour and this morning I was reminded about the enormity of the journey that I am about to …Read more

A little more to lose

Tour has lots of hills in it this year and I realised very early on in my training that people with kegs instead of 6 packs don’t go up hills very well πŸ™ I am not a natural hill climber so any advantage that I can get I will take. Over the last few months that has been the momentum effect. Hit the downhill as hard as you can and …Read more

That ride when you know you are nearly ready

Training has been going as well as expected with all this rain. It’s been hard to get out in the last few weeks as every morning the roads have been wet. Its a delicate balance between getting the training in and being safe as the last thing that you want to do is come down after all the preparation and not be able to complete the Tour. At this time …Read more

2018 Tour de Cure – Day 0

Today is the day that the excitement starts to build. The day before Tour really starts. No riding today but we need to get to the start point this year which is sort of off the beaten track. The day started early enough getting to the airport for an 8.40 flight to Mackay which is around a 1hour 40-minute flight from Brisbane. Because of the volume of bikes that had …Read more

Tour de Cure 2018 – 1 day to go

I cant really believe that it is 9 years since I started riding with Tour de Cure. That time has gone past really quickly. This years preparation has gone very well. So far I have done nearly 5000km since Christmas with a three of those weeks over 500km which really gets the body ready for the long distances. The longest week that I did was just a few weeks ago …Read more
