The Journey so far

My journey began in 2010 following friend Paul Egan ride in his first Tour de Cure from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast. Paul is about to take part in his 5th Tour de Cure riding from Sydney to Hobart. It is Paul’s dedication that spurred me on to send in an application to become a part of the Tour de Cure Team.

I joined Redcliffe Triathlon Club and started riding on weekends with different riding groups within the club just to get the feel for group riding as I had never done this before. I found that I was being dropped all the time and the cause was my 18 yr old dinosaur of a bike weighing in at 15 kilograms.

After being accepted as a guest rider for the 2014 Tour I stepped it up a gear and started riding at every opportunity to get some fitness into the legs that had been neglected over the winter months.

I joined Paul for a ride on the Brisbane River Loop in early November and it was as this point that we knew if I was going have any chance at getting over the hills from Sydney to Canberra it was the bike that had to change. Paul offered his original Tour de Cure bike on on loan until I decided on what bike I liked.

Taking Paul up on his offer I picked up his Cannondale Six and start riding in earnest. To my amazement I was riding faster and longer with an 8 kilogram lighter bike. I had been taking different bikes out on test rides and finally decided on a Scott Foil 10.

New BikeSanta Clause came early this year and my new bike was delivered on the 6th December 2013 and to date I have ridden 1,560 km’s.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect as this was about the same time that the Tour de Cure Training Program arrived. I have been following the training program as a guide and riding the km’s required. The next 12 weeks are going to be fun and challenging as my fitness improves to tackle the distances and climbing on the route from Sydney to Canberra.
