TDC Day 7Eildon – Melbourne

 Family.

Welcome back to my blog for the first time today. As I write this we are currently heading out of Port Phillip Bay on our way to Devenport on the Spirit of Tasmania.

Gloomy start this morning in Eildon. It had rained all night, but thankfully had stopped before we all met for breakfast. Lots of kids and CBA did their first proper school presentation to the Eildon P.S. Lots of fun!

We rolled out after Berrett’s last cross of the day…me desperately trying to get my mug on TV..and seemingly succeeded according to Ava. Ahead of us was 156kms and about 1500 metres of vertical climb.

A fairly uneventful ride other than a really stiff headwind that we struggled with a bit in the engine room. Still we made ok time. Got to BlackSpur , and that is such a beautiful climb and descent, that despite the greasy conditions we were presented with it was magical. It was almost like rolling through a rainforest.

On to Healesville and then a trek through the Yarra Valley ( was tempted to ask the peleton captain if we could stop at Yarra Yering, but resisted). Then onto to a very gloomy Melbourne. The route we took was a shocker. It took us around 3 hours through Montrose, Springvale, Glen Waverley etc.

And I was bummed when we arrived at Port Melbourne as my parents and friends had been waiting for a good couple of hours. I got to see them for about 5 mins before TV committments and rolling onto the ship meant we had to leave. Thank you so much Mum & Dad for being there..Shawn I am sorry I missed you…Simone I apologise too but I did see Paul from Unicorn and we got a couple of great pictures together.

We made our way to dinner and I was greeted by a suprise email…with a youtube video of Tina and the girls wishing me luck which had been arranged by one of the TDC riders. I teared up.

Our waiter tonight , and the barman both shook our hands and told us of their cancer stories, wives, girlfriends etc. This is why we are doing this. this is why this crazy idea of riding 1576kms is so important..it’s not for the glory…but it’s because that with one person being diagnosed with cancer somewhere in the world every 29 seconds…chances are it will touch one of us, or our families. In 2014 that’s not good enough. We need to make this blight on our society disappear. Through our small efforts and your support I know we can do it.

We will be in Tassie in morning. Some of the crew are riding stationary bikes in the bar next to me now…”riding across Bass Strait”.

Off to bed soon. Another big day.

All my best df

ps: welcome future TDC rider Master Angus Newton this morning. Lots of love from your TDC family.
