Day 5 Corryong to Wangaratta

We have now travelled over 1/2 way to our destination of Hobart (1,577kms). For all doing the tour we talk about having a ‘hump day’, which typically occurs around day 4 or 5, and its when your body reacts to the workload and you struggle with injuries or generally not feeling well. We’ll today was my hump day, with chronic knee pain in the left leg, probably the result of grinding at low speed up the climbs pushing those in difficulty. Pain killers, strapping and small adjustment to pedal action helped me through the day. Here’s hoping everything recovers by tomorrow.

Each day we are assigned to one of three pelotons, both designed to make it safer on the road to move a large group of cyclists, but as one of our team is a TV reporter and does a live cross each morning on the Sunrise breakfast show, it is the role of the last peloton to wait for Mark Beretta until he’s finished his morning Sunrise breakfast show crosses…who provide awesome coverage for our cause! This morning we were assigned to peloton 3 which meant we had a sleep in (7am).

we rolled out from Corryong to a great farewll from the local school we had visited and Sunrise had done its live crosses. What faced us was a big day of 185kms and over 2000 meters of climbing. Whilst we had crossed over the Snowy Mtns into the state of Victoria,we still faced plenty of rolling hills. Having left some two hours after the first peloton we also needed to make up time, so our support crew were not stuck on the road all day.

We made great progress rolling into our lunch spot in Yackandandah just as peloton two were departing.

overall we had great ride with everyone holding one of our quicker days, an avg speed of over 30kph in spite of climbing over 2000m. We arrived into our evening stay, Wangaratta, 30 mins earlier than expected.

Our community dinner was held at the local pub, with a great turnout again from the local community. We held an auction with prizes donated by local businesses and our corporate sponsors, raising additional funds for our cause. We have now raised over $2m and are well on our way to reaching our target of $3m. Over the last 9 years Tour de Cure has raised over $12m to help fund cancer research, to help support finding a cure fo cancer.

Tomorrow is our queen stage, 200kms.
