About Me

I got into cycling in 1984, recovering from breaking my tibial plateau (knee) into 3 pieces in 1983. I then participated in my first triathlon in Sydney (swim across Sydney Harbour) in 1985. The purchased a Miyata bike and did a few 1.5km/40km/12km triathlons starting at Umina beach on the Central coast.

I went overseas for 14 mths in 1987/88 and bought a Reynolds 531C Eclipse bike in London and then rode 10,000km over 5 months. Starting by heading north to Norway for the midnight sun, and then all through Scandanavia and Europe finishing with sending the bike home by ship from  Athens to Sydney. I still now use this bike as a commuter.

I am married with two teenage daughters in Yr12 and Yr10 at school in Adelaide.

My brother’s wife, Sara-Beth was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 34. She remained a very bubbly, effervescent person with such a positive influence on all people she came within contact. Sara-Beth fought through many treatments for 6 years right up until she passed away 2 weeks after her 40th birthday in 2004. My brother Ian then raised their 12yo and 10yo children as a single parent.

It was at this time of Sara-Beth’s funeral, my wife had then been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. The chemo treatment seemed almost inhumane on how her body reacted over 2 years, but fantastically 5 years later on, she was declared in remission.

I like cycling and have ridden and toured for many years. This challenge is for me to do more then just ride, but to raise money that will make a difference.
