Hill Training

Total Rides: 5

Total Distance: 254 km

Total Ascent: 3,402 m

The route for this year’s tour has quite a bit more climbing than last year’s, and this is now being reflected in the training we’re doing. Unless you’re a masochist, riding up hill on a bike is not fun – at best it’s a way of getting to the good part where you get to go down the other side! My last two training rides have both involved riding essentially nothing but hills … and even worse, repeats of those hills. On these rides there are no long flat stretches to recover, check the scenery and talk – all that’s involved is putting in the hard yards on the climb, then rolling down to the bottom again, and repeating the climb, and then repeating the climb again. I know it’s doing me good, I know I’ll be grateful when we’re on the long uphill stretches on tour … but it sure does reduce the incentive to get out of bed and ride!
