Welcome to the Hurt Locker …

Total Rides: 7

Total Distance: 435 km

Total Ascent: 5,572 m

Well the training rides are starting to stack up and my body’s starting to complain about it! I may have overdone it a bit this week having been out on five consecutive days – the last ride being my first assessment ride; 130km with 1,400m climbing. The assessment ride was yesterday on a hot humid day and although I managed to complete the ride, I spent a fair amount of time in the place the guys refer to as the ‘Hurt Locker’. You know you’re in the Hurt Locker when your legs are hurting, your energy levels are low and you’d rather be off the bike and doing something a lot more fun. Well that was me yesterday; I lost track of how many times I tried in vain to find a lower gear to climb in, and no matter how many bars/gels I consumed energy levels remained painfully low. It’s at times like this that the camaraderie of the group, the fact that you’re normally not the only one who’s ‘doing it tough’ and the reasons why you’re ridingĀ get you through.

Day’s like yesterday are great motivation to keep going with the training. On tour we’ll be riding more that 130km for 10 days in a row, some of those days having a lot more climbing than we suffered through yesterday. Doing the hard yards now, having a few visits to the Hurt Locker, will allow us to get so much more from the experience of being on Tour.
