My Tour de Cure blog

Welcome to My Tour de Cure Blog.

Having completed my first Signature tour in 2013, riding from Adelaide to Canberra, I have decided to again undertake the ‘TdC Signature tour, which in 2014 will be starting in Sydney and finishing in Hobart. I found my inaugural tour in 2013 a very rewarding experience. The opportunity to share the experience with 50 other tour riders plus an amazing team of support crew, was a truly memorable experience. The 5 months of training and fund raising is no mean feat. Plus, completing the 1,500+ kilometers in riding the tour.

When I reflect on my ‘tour’ experiences there were a bunch of real stand-out memories….the opportunity to share our ‘be fit be healthy’ lifestyle message with over 4,500 school kids along our route, who treated us like rock stars as we arrived at their school. Plus, the community dinners arranged at each nights stop over, where we met many amazing supporters and health care workers in very remote areas of Australia. I recall at one of these dinners, after we handed over a $5k cheque to a local hospital and when asked ‘…where would the money go?’ They explained with our donation their cancer patients would no longer need to drive 6 hours to Adelaide / Melbourne to receive their monthly treatment and sleep in a car. Instead, with the tour’s donation they could now afford to fly an oncologist specialist each month, for the next 12 months, to treat their cancer patients at their local hospital. Small gestures can go a very long way towards easing a heavy burden for many!

With all these great memories, plus the tour finishing in Hobart, the favourite destination of good friend Erik Mather who passed away in 2011 from melanoma cancer, I decided to undertake my ‘2nd tour’, the 2014 Signature tour from Sydney to Hobart. And again help raise much needed funds to find a cure for this insidious disease, cancer, and also help raise awareness that at least ‘1 in 3 cancers; are preventable with a healthy lifestyle..
