Training for 2014 Tour de Cure…2 weeks to go

To ride nearly 1,576kms and climb 18,000 meters on bicycle requires plenty of preparation. So the past 4 months I’ve been grinding out the k’s, riding between 400-500kms per week. This means plenty of 5.00am starts, (apologies to my wife who gets woken by the alarm at 4,30am), and riding in rain, hail or shine….maybe no quite hail, but certainly ridden in the wet plenty of times. Plus, eating like a horse! Ride 100km and you consumes roughly 3,000 calories…so a great excuse to tuck into all the high carb foods without any concern you’ll be piling on the weight. Will need to change a few ‘eating habits’ post tour!

To add some variety to the training schedule I headed off for a weekend of riding in the Snowies…great riding country! Joining the ‘Boundary Riders’, for their annual weekend sojourn to the Snowy Mountains….300kms @8,000m elevation was ideal preparation for what awaits us on tour.

Along with all the training their is also the find raising. Each tour riders needs to raise $12k (I still have a way to go!). Obviously this is more than just a bike ride, its more about raising both funds and awareness. Thank you to all my very generous supporters who have donated….believe me every $ counts! We are fighting a disease that requires significant research and understanding to defeat….which in turn requires considerable funding $. Special thanks to Monica Mather and her cookie company, Holt Avenue Cookies, for baking copious of amounts of wonderful ‘TdC gingerbread cookies’ and Cam & Mel at ‘The Mews Cafe’ (Mosman), for helping sell them….all proceeds going to the tour. In addition, thanks to Canterbury Bulldogs and their coach, Des Hasler, who kindly arranged a signed 2014 Bulldogs jumper, which is currently available to purchase by all those ‘Bulldogs fans’.

Now, less than 2 weeks to go, so back to training & fund raising.
