Signature Tour Day 4

Robe to Mt Gambier

137km, 1,052 elevation, 5hrs 9mins ride time

My day started early as we were on Sunrise duty, so we had to be on the pretty Robe foreshore at 5.20am.  As we are still in South Australia we are half an hour behind Sydney so their first cross at 6am. I got my face on the first 2 crosses, so friends and family should be happy!

We had the most beautiful sunrise greet us, and then 20 minutes later we had a shower!!

This bad weather is just hanging around, which is a pity.  For the most part though it was pretty good, and the wind has eased off quite a bit.

The terrain luckily was not dead flat as it was yesterday. There were a few more undulations to take the pressure off our very sore seat bones.  There are plenty of injuries and fatigue setting in on the peloton.  This is when some of the cracks start to show for those that may not have trained hard enough in the lead up.  We are given a 16 week training program to follow, in an attempt to avoid having people ‘under done’ for tour. The hardest days on this tour are days 7 and 8, so let’s hope we all get to ride them as a team.

We visited a beautiful place called Beachport, which has the most aqua water colour, and a big long jetty.  When we were doing a few ride past for the Sunrise crew, I had a very funny incident with a bollard, where I basically ended up hugging it whilst still clipped into my bike, with the back wheel in the air.  I even have GoPro footage of it.  I nearly wet my pants laughing, as did the rest of the group.  Jens was right behind me and did such a funny recount of it at lunch, that I asked Geoff Coombes if he could recount it again at our community dinner to share in the laughs!!  Funnily enough it is called the Muppet Award.

We thought we had made it into Mount Gambier dry, but nooooo, we got rained on as we were heading in.  It was a challenge riding in the rough shoulder too on the busy highway, but we all got there in one piece.

We had a lovely community dinner, which was attended by lots of ‘extras’.  Looking forward to a short ride tomorrow of only 86km, but which includes the team time trial.

Sweet dreams all, until tomorrow.
