Signature Tour Day 7

Warrnambool to Apollo Bay

181km,  1,839 elevation, 7hrs 5mins ride time

Wow - the Great Ocean Road

Wow – the Great Ocean Road

Another big day in the saddle today, but the best thing was that the weather was perfect.  Yep – perfect.  Bloody freezing at 2 degrees in the morning, but that is what happens when there is no cloud cover.  Once the sun came up and our bones thawed out, it was a cloudless day.

It was so nice to see the Great Ocean Road from a bike, as I have only ever done it from a car.  So much more special.  I was on radio again today, which I rather enjoy doing. It makes me feel like I am contributing that bit more to the Tour by helping to keep it safe.

We had a mishap today which saw 4 riders go down.  In all the times I have been on a Tour (this one is number 8), I have never seen an accident.  One broken collarbone, one broken bike, lots of road rash, but happy to say they are all here with us and no one needed too much medical attention.  One very tough person continued to ride, even though we suspect broken bones in the hand.  One will definitely be back on for the last day’s ride into Melbourne.17134516839_57e9ec063b_k

I continue to get to know even more people with more amazing stories.  It’s great to roll up beside a newbie and find out their life story (short version).

I am off to bed, as it’s been both a physical and emotional day on Tour.  The knee is definitely fatiguing now, but I know it will see me through until the end of Tour, and then I can give it a rest!  Very much looking forward to catching up with Warren, Aidan and Mad on the weekend when we roll into Melbourne.  The kids have not seen me finish a big tour as yet.

A picture says a thousand words. Big smiles for today!!
