Getting close ….

It’s always fascinating watching people’s reactions when I tell them about what it is that I am doing.  Riding from Sydney to Hobart – you have got to be kidding!!  I know that I can do it based on those before me that have already done these amazing journeys!!

When you have a tough day out on the bike you have so many thoughts go through your mind while you are fighting the urge to just phone a friend to come and pick you up in the car.  Yesterday was such a day.  I started feeling a bit unwell about 10km into a 170km ride.  At the 72km mark we climbed up to O’Reilly’s, which is a 14km climb.  I spent a few minutes at the top hidden from my team mates whilst retching (managed to still hold everything down, but my body was not happy with me).  We descended into Canungra where I had a meat pie and can of coke at the bakery.  Funnily enough I started feeling a bit better after this, albeit with a bit less energy than normal.

So I had to play lots of mind games yesterday.  I look down at my cross bar where I have a “Dad” sticker.  I think of all the people who would have been having treatment for Cancer, and they don’t get a choice.  I thought of Daren Armstrong who was with us on this ride  and is on Tour with us as a full rider.  Read his profile on the Tour De Cure website.  He has had two bouts of cancer (unrelated) and has only finished his latest cancer treatment in December 2013.  We also have David Halliwell who had a kidney removed in September 2013 (pre cancerous tumors).  There are just so many inspirational people that I am lucky enough to meet on Tour.

I am grateful for my health.

So now there are only 25 days before we depart Martin Place in Sydney.  Be sure to be watching Sunrise on Friday 28th March!!  Last week I did 488km and 5,141m elevation.  The weekend was a big one with two big rides of 124km and a 170km.  On Tour that happens every day for ten days straight, so you have to toughen up both mentally and physically for that!!

Wanted to share a great experience that Tour veteran Paul Egan had this week whilst riding home along Logan Road.  A car pulled up and gave him $20 and said what a wonderful job he was doing.  Awesome!!
