Day 1 | Mackay to Midge Point| 150km’s

After all the months of preparation, the tour has finally begun – Tour de Cure’s 12th Signature Tour! We had a big send off from Mackay this morning by 1000 local school kids, who also held their own bike challenge at Mackay Harbour to raise money for TDC.

Then it was off to Mackay Central School for our first school visit. A really energetic bunch of kids that thoroughly enjoyed the Be Fit, Be Healthy, Be Happy presentation. Justin Pratt did a great job of presenting and the kids loved him. Then it was a 50km ride to lunch at Miriani. The weather started to really warm up after lunch and a few people were feeling the heat – better get used to that!

The rest of the day was spent travelling on to Midge Point. Needless to say Day 1 was a big one!

For something a little different, tonight we’re sleeping in an an airport hanger in Bloomsbury –  about 165 people across 8 hangers. Lakeside Airstrip is a small private airport near Midge Point. All the mattresses have been supplied by Forty Winks and will be donated to another charity after tonight.  Could be an interesting evening. Not sure I’ll get much sleep.
