Day 6 | Tinaroo to Cairns | 112kms

We’ve made it to Cairns….first time around. We’ll be back here on Saturday again for the finish so it’s only the one night. Today we rode from Lake Tinaroo through to Cairns. A very nice 140 kms through to the coast.

We had to get to Yungaburra for breakfast which was 24kms away so it was a pre dawn start. Breakfast was by the lake which was absolutely beautiful! Stupidly I didn’t take any photos so my apologies. I’m sure there’s one on social media somewhere!! Sometimes it just gets so busy trying to get people organised for our peloton and trying to sort my own food and hydration that the sightseeing gets forgotten.

Our next stint to morning tea in Atherton was fast. It was slightly downhill so we were sitting up over 40kmh most of the way. The peloton was smokin!! We then road through to Kuranda and stopped at the Butterfly sanctuary for a quick refuel before descending down to Cairns. Kuranda was beautiful! We got together for a quick photo and prepared the bunch for the downhill run to Cairns.

The descent was spectacular. Winding our way through the beautiful rainforest…not that we had too much time to take in the views! We had to stop at the bottom of the hill so the Police could escort us through a particularly dangerous roundabout. Not sure why …..but we did as we were told!

We then rode into the city itself and stopped by an Optus store for a promo. The corporate visits are just as important on the tour at the school visits. After the Optus stop we rode through to the Esplanade in Cairns and had lunch in the park! But the day was not over. We were asked to quickly pull a bunch together and ride to a local Specialized bike shop and the Vittoria coffee shop next door. Both very long and loyal sponsors of Tour de Cure so we were more than happy.

After that we were all able to check into a hotel and enjoy a little downtime. We had a great dinner in the hotel boardroom again hosted by Optus.

Tomorrow we ride on to Cape Tribulation which will no doubt be awesome!!
