This is Matilda. And this is Matilda’s hat.
Matilda’s hat is special. It can do magic.
When Matilda had hair she never needed a hat. When she lost it a nice lady gave her a magic one.
Sometimes Matilda feels embarrassed.
When people stare at her and whisper, Matilda’s hat can make her invisible.
Sometimes Matilda feels angry.
Then she scrunches up her magic hat, throws it on the floor and stomps on it.
Sometimes Matilda feels tired.
Then she pulls her hat over her eyes to make the bright hospital lights disappear.
Sometimes Matilda feels sick.
One time her magic hat caught all the yucky stuff. Mum smiled and washed it.
Sometimes Matilda feels scared.
When she didn’t have a tissue to wipe the tears and blow her nose, Mum washed the hat again.
Matilda knows that her name means ‘brave warrior’. Her mum told her so.
Matilda knows that she needs to keep fighting, even when she feels like giving up sometimes.
Matilda knows that she can win this battle, after all, she’s got a magic hat.
