Week 18 of 24 Training and Fundraising Update

This Tour De Cure journey keeps throwing up surprises and amazing results.

This week I have passed $30,000 raised, which is twice my original target, a target that at the time of setting I thought was going to be a struggle. Now I am going after $40,000, why not heh!

Thanks to Coca Cola, in particular Frank, for making a Bronze corporate donation and providing product for the duration of the tour. The contribution of both cash and product is awesome and I know everyone will appreciate a cold coke after a long day in the saddle.

As you may know my father has been going through treatment for thyroid cancer during the past few months. This week his treatment progressed to radiotherapy, 20 doses over 4 weeks. The best news for us however was that he was told he is in remission, now that makes the hard work worth the effort. 🙂

In the Sydney Morning Herald last week it was stated that “Cancer takes over from heart disease as our biggest killer.“

Quoting from the article … “The co-author of the WHO World Cancer Report, Bernard Stewart, said the main message from the report was that cancer was a ‘largely preventable disease’ … the increasing burden of cancer with 14.1 million cases in 2012 meant something must be done to stop cancers before they occurred … we now know for certain that the vast majority of cancers are attributable to what have been called lifestyle choices … both cancers & cardiovascular diseases have common risk factors including smoking, poor nutrition, overweight/obesity and physical inactivity”

The “ Be Fit – Be Healthy – Be Happy “ message Tour de Cure shares with primary school children is part of the education to help them make healthy lifestyle choices, and hopefully avoid becoming part of these statistics. Your support funds cancer prevention projects addressing education and awareness within communities as well as projects focused on cancer research and support … THANKS SO MUCH.

Due to a trip to Melbourne today I wasn’t able to train, so an extra rest day, woohoo. A big day yesterday though in the drizzle certainly made up for the day off. Below are two photos taken from the bottom of Garrie Beach, the first is where Owen and I wanted to go after more than 4 hours of riding, and the second is where we had to head, straight back up the hill on awful roads.

Still a solid week of training with 5 rides and 425kms and more than 4,000m of climbing meters. This week it’s back to ‘easy’ week and recovery rides, which the body is definitely looking forward to.

Getting closer, very exciting.
