Week 20 of 24 Training and Fundraising Update

I’ve borrowed this quote from the TDC website, it’s a great reflection of what we are trying to achieve:

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful people can change the world. Indeed, its the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead, Anthropologist

I’ve had a great week for fundraising, including a massive combined training day and fundraising effort on the first day of O-Week at the University of Sydney. On a day that reached 33 degrees under the shelter that I had for the day, I rode for 5.5 hours on the trainer and raised over $800 on the day. The heat was draining and to maintain hydration I went through 6 Powerade bottles, 5 Pump water bottles and 3 sparkling mineral waters. For good measure I also had 2 Powerbars, 3 GuGels, a packet of snakes and a chicken salad sandwich and still lost 1.1 kgs on the day.

On Thursday and Friday I went the more traditional approach for O-Week and manned a stall with the assistance of some student volunteers and the amazing support of Tina my EA and Sandra my HR Director. Over the three days we raised a tick over $2,000, an amazing result. Thanks to all who contributed and assisted over the three days. The best donation I received over the three days was from a lady working in the Red Cross stall who had survived two battles with cancer. She was very grateful for her TDC bag.

With other donations received over the week I am now up to $33,700. Plans over the coming weeks have me quietly confident that I can hit $40,000 by the time of tour, which will be incredible, given I was secretly worried about hitting the minimum requirement of $12,000 20 weeks ago.

The weather this week in Sydney has not been good for long rides, both Saturday and Sunday rides cut short due to rain, only 362kms for the week. Today’s ride was a real mental battle, felt very tired this week and being out on my own today made it difficult to push through the pain and tiredness. Hurry back from Bushies tour Owen!

We are now heading into the final phase of training over the next two weeks. The hard work is almost done.

Cheers

Woody
