Week 1 of 20 Training and Fundraising Update

This is my first blog for the 2015 Signature Tour, which obviously indicates that my application was successful and I will be riding again to raise funds and awareness for a cure for cancer. The experience earlier this year was incredible and to be able to do it again is amazing.

I will again be riding in memory of my mother in law, thankfully my father, father in law and brother in law are all on the better side of recovery. Unfortunately there are friends who have suffered loss and others who are fighting the disease at the moment, so I have further reasons to fund raise and to improve awareness.

Having seen where some of the money goes and the rural projects that we supported in 2014, I am determined this year to raise even more funds. I’ve set myself a crazy target, but heh, a wise man (goes by the nickname of Cougar) said to me last year to think BIG, so the target this year is $100,000, roughly double what I did in 2014. So jump on board and be a part of finding a cure for this hideous disease, in some areas the researchers are so close.

My fundraising to date has been slower than last year, but in the last week my first corporate donation has come in taking me over $5,000 raised. The good news is that there are up to 4 more corporate donations ($10,000) that could come in the next 7 days which will be great for the first milestone, to raise the required $12,000 to be a rider. Plans are underway for some new ideas this time and a key discussion starts on Friday this week, so hopefully some good news in next week’s update.

My training has been a bit unsettled through winter as a result of an unfortunate racing accident that culminated in three broken ribs and a collapsed lung. So my base level fitness hasn’t been as planned. The past two weeks of hard work are starting to show some positive results and I’m on my way. My training partner should be back on board this week after having effectively been a professional cyclist on and off for the past couple of months. It will be great to have some company on the long rides.

To make things a little more interesting, and some may say challenging, a bunch of Tour De Cure riders have decided to enter the 3Peaks Challenge at the start of March, as a bit of a warm up. It’s a little race over 235km and three of Victoria’s mountains, Tawonga Gap, Mt Hotham and Falls Creek. There are 13 weeks to the 3Peaks race which means some long rides ahead over the Xmas break to get in shape to climb and climb. Falls Creek is the last 30km of the race and will take some serious mental strength to survive.

Till next week.

Cheers

Woody
